A bill filed with the State House that would have created an independent redistricting committee to redraw the state’s Congressional districts based on the state’s interests — rather than those of the political party in power in order to insulate current legislators’ chances of re-election — died without being heard in the House Committee controlling redistricting.

House Joint Resolution 1001, by State Rep. Andy Fugate, D-Del City, would have created an independent redistricting committee to prohibit anyone with financial or political interest - lawmakers, lobbyists, their families - from serving on the committee. It also would have added independent voters to the process for the first time.

“It’s disappointing that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle refused to even hear the proposed legislation,” Fugate said. “Instead of drawing districts to better serve communities, our current redistricting process allows politicians to choose the communities they serve. It’s time to stop a century of politicians picking their voters. In our country, voters get to pick their politicians.”

The current proposed redistricting map was created without input from Independents or Democrats, and is viewed as likely to be adopted without change in the Republican-controlled state Legislature.
