THINGS TO DO

Monday, November 22, 2021, 10:26 AM

Muskogee martial arts legend Louie Cruz passed away over the weekend after a battle with COVID-19, according to family and friends.

Cruz had been on a ventilator prior to his passing.

The owner and chief instructor at Dragon Fly Dojo on York Street, Cruz gave inspiration and training to numerous families throughout the Muskogee area as he mentored countless martial arts champions. Himself a champion, Cruz’s two brothers, Charlie Meggyes and Michael Cruz, were also martial arts champions, as well as his sons, Ryan Cruz and Brandon Cruz.

Cruz’s Facebook page was flooded with tributes from friends, family, students and ex-students and their parents yesterday and today as the shock of his passing sank in.

“This is with a heavy heart and a river of tears!” Meggyes said in a message. “My brother, best friend and mentor, Master Louie ‘Dragonfly’ Cruz passed away this evening! I am at a loss for words right now!”

No word yet on funeral arrangements, but they will be posted here when they become available.

UPDATE, Nov. 23: Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation starts today until 5 p.m., runs Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will be at the funeral home Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to greet friends.
