An inmate, Michael Bo Guthrie, 47, at the Muskogee County Jail was assaulted by a cellmate on Jan. 3, according to jail personnel. Following the assault, Guthrie was sent via EMS to the Muskogee Saint Francis Hospital for treatment.
After he was released back to the jail, he later began exhibiting more signs of medical distress, so he was again taken to the hospital by EMS and released on his own recognizance. The hospital transferred him to Tulsa, where he died ten days later, according to Chief Deputy Michael Mahan.
“We called in the OSBI to investigate,” Mahan said. “In the interest of transparency, we want an outside agency to conduct this.”
There is no word yet on whether the cellmate will be charged with any crime, pending the outcome of the OSBI investigation.
Guthrie was in jail facing felony charges of assault and battery on an emergency medical technician, accused of twice punching a female hospital security guard.
