Jason Edward Maxwell, 34, of Muskogee has been charged with aggravated assault and battery after allegedly sending another inmate to the hospital after a beating.
Jail Administrator Gary Garvin reported that jail cameras recorded Maxwell approach Alexander, then the two exchanged words. After that, Maxwell was seen on the recording punching Alexander in the left eye, causing Alexander to collapse to the ground. Maxwell was then seen on the recording standing over Alexander, striking him more, and searching his body. Alexander was “moving slowly and dazed” for the next several minutes until he was able to get to his feet and stumble to the cell’s sliding door, at which point Maxwell allegedly punched him again.
Maxwell was moved to a lockdown cell and Alexander was moved to the hospital. Maxwell told Garvin the fight was over “racial tension,” and later said he thought Alexander was given a gang order to “shank” Maxwell.
Neither man would write a statement about the fight.
Maxwell has numerous previous drug and firearms convictions. Alexander is in jail for failure to pay on a previous burglary conviction.
