The Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Muskogee is set to close Jan. 6, according to Mayor Bob Coburn.

The store, which opened Oct. 30, 2015, has been open two years and started handing out notices to employees today.

“The store ... was part of the first phase of the Urban Renewal Project,” Coburn said. “While this is certainly disappointing, the city will be actively engaged with the developer of Three Rivers Plaza to ensure the ongoing growth and development of the Urban Renewal Area.”

“Too bad we didn’t use our resources to bring in career jobs,” Wayne Divelbiss, who is running against Coburn, said. “It’s sad that it’s leaving. They brought all those stores in under a TIF tax, and those things just don’t work.”

A TIF tax is a public financing method used as a subsidy for redevelopment, diverting future property tax revenue increases toward an economic development area.
