Died Friday, September 25, 2020

Walter Hale ‘Buddy’ Stubbs Jr., a 79-year-old lifelong Fort Gibson resident, was born December 8, 1940 in Muskogee, OK to Walter Sr. and Wyenne (Copeland) Stubbs and peacefully passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020 at his home. Buddy attended Fort Gibson Schools and continued his education at Northeastern State University. He married his best friend and the love of his life, Elsie Marie James on February 13, 1960 in Tahlequah, OK. He and Elsie made their home in Fort Gibson and started a farming career that would last a lifetime. Buddy and Elsie owned and operated Fort Gibson Nursery for 25 years, growing everything from shrubs to trees. They continued farming, but in the grain market to this day. Buddy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vacationing in the mountains. Buddy was very civic minded and served on the Fort Gibson School Board and the Fort Gibson State Bank Board. He was a longtime member of the Boulevard Christian Church in Muskogee. His passion in life was his family and working the land. Buddy is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Lee Harrison; daughter, Julia Renee Stubbs; and grandson, David Walter Stubbs. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Elsie of the home; son, Walter H. Stubbs III and wife Angela of Fort Gibson; granddaughters, Tiffany Pepe and husband Vince of Wiscasset, Maine; Heather Brown of Tahlequah, OK; Cassandra Stubbs of Muskogee, OK; grandson, Caleb Taylor and wife Paige of Tahlequah, OK; great-grandson, Tristen Pepe of Wiscasset, Maine; brother-in-law, Eugene S. James and wife Luedeen of Leesburg, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at the Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson with the family receiving friends 4PM-7PM. A funeral service celebrating Buddy’s life will be held 1:00PM Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Fort Gibson First Baptist Church with Mr. Budo Perry and Pastor Nate Capps officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at the Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson with Larry D. Cooper, Steve Cooper, Mike Cooper, Dwayne Cooper, Jim White, and Caleb Taylor serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers are Charles Woods, Joe Stephens, Don Lowe, and Jim Whitehead.
