Velma L. James, 80

Born Tuesday, April 23, 1940

Died Tuesday, October 13, 2020

On April 23, 1940, husband and wife, Jesse Porter Jr. and Laly (Wharton) Porter gave birth in Muskogee, OK to a sweet baby girl with the most prettiest hazel green eyes and sandy red hair and named her Velma Louise Porter. She was the 5th of 8 children born to this union.
At an early age she gave her life to Christ. Her love for attending church was so great, if you saw her walking on a Sunday morning, Sunday evening, or a Wednesday evening it was for certain she was on her journey to get to the House of God.
At the age of 19 she gave her hand in marriage to Wayne Jackson Jr. and to this union 4 children were born, Renita Davette, Johnathan Dewayne, Sherman Laron, and finally her girl LaDonna Francine. This marriage was dissolved and she later decided to remarry a very honorable man named David James. To this union a baby boy was born, Gregory Lamar. Total nuggets in her life, 4.

She completed her education and made the decision to be a homemaker. She enjoyed her life of being a homemaker for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. She loved cooking, baking, playing games, and had a love for walking, especially with her son Johnathan and/or niece Sherlyn. It was known to those who knew her that she had a heart for listening and helping others. If you ever needed her she would be right there to help. She was a very independent woman and if there was a task to be done she wouldn’t ask for help, she would just dress for the weather and start walking. At times she would get offered rides and sometimes she would take them and sometimes she would not. Another highlight to her year was enjoying the Annual Ladies Day with her Church of Christ sisters.

Preceding her in death, her husband David James, her parents Jesse Jr. and Laly Porter, sister Helen Porter, 3 brothers John, Jesse III and Larry Porter, brother in law Bill Gilkey, sister in law Irene Porter, special nieces Theresa Mae Gandy, Henryetta Dowdy.

She leaves in God’s care to cherish her sweet memories her children Johnathan Jackson, Muskogee, OK, Sherman (Catherine) Jackson, Muskogee, OK, LaDonna and Rudolph Shanklin, Tulsa, OK, Gregory James, Muskogee, OK; two sisters Norma Gilkey, Tulsa, OK, Delores Faye (Rolland) Jackson, Hercules, CA; brother Lonnie (Rosemary) Porter, Tulsa, OK; sister in law Edna Porter, Tulsa, OK; grandchildren Crystal Swarer, Jacory Bullock, Muskogee, OK, Brandon (Christian) Jackson, Fort Knox, KY, Jacob L.
