Shawn Wayne Wheeler, 51

Died Wednesday, July 1, 2020

Shawn Wayne Wheeler of Muskogee Oklahoma passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. He was 51 years of age and had been struggling with heart issues for the past year. He had open heart surgery in August 2019 and a combo pacemaker defibrillator inserted in April 2020. He was unable to return to work at Frito Lay where he had been for the past 19 years.
He was born February 4, 1969 to Jackie and Elaine Wheeler of Muldrow, Oklahoma. He attended school in Muldrow where he played football and earned a college scholarship to East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. After a knee injury he transferred to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah where he met his future wife April.
Shawn was an avid deer hunter, loved fishing, and enjoyed OU football. He was even known to participate in a couple of dance recitals with his daughters over the years. Shawn really enjoyed the outdoors, boating, and spending time in nature. He liked riding his four-wheeler around the property and checking on his ducks and feeding the deer. He was a member of the Cherokee Nation tribe.
In 1993 he married April Nicole Arnold of Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Muskogee and in 1996 and 2000 they welcomed two beautiful daughters that were the light of his life.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Marie and Ruhl Moore from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and paternal grandparents Ava and Thadis Wheeler from Muldrow, Oklahoma.
He is survived by his wife, April of the home; two daughters Jessica Layne Wheeler of the home, and Alexis Dayne Ross and husband Kyle Ross of Wagner, Oklahoma; parents, Jackie and Elaine Wheeler of Muldrow, Oklahoma; in- laws, Ronnie Arnold of Muskogee, Oklahoma, whom he spent a lot of time with; Linda and Al Kimmle of Grove, Oklahoma; special friend, that was like a brother to him, Brian Echols and wife Tammy of Coweta, Oklahoma; two young men that were like bonus sons to him, Kolton Christy of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma and Trey Wesbrooks of Glenpool, Oklahoma.
A memorial service will be at Cornerstone Funeral at 1830 N. York St., Muskogee, Oklahoma at 5:00pm Tuesday, July 7, 2020. Family will receive friends 4:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday, July 7, 2020. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested all memorials in memory of Shawn be made to the Wounded Veterans of Oklahoma, which was close to his heart.
