Sequoyah Martin, 89

Born Saturday, January 18, 1930

Died Saturday, November 2, 2019

Sequoyah “Squaw” Martin was born January 18, 1930 to John Hercules Martin and Vina Cottingham Martin on the coldest January 18th on record in Oklahoma. He grew up in Zeb, Oklahoma and attended school at Ryder and Woodall.
On December 12, 1950, Sequoyah married Earlene Switzer of Muskogee for a union that was 1 month, 11 days, short of 69 years.
In his early years, he worked in construction in Colorado, Nevada, and California.
On returning to Oklahoma, he began working for the Tahlequah Street Department; retiring after 29 years of service. He joined a great group of guys at Tahlequah Fire Department for 21 years during this time.
Sequoyah was of Southern Baptist faith. He was a member of the Mason Cherokee Lodge #10 receiving a 50 year pin. He was also a member of the Bedouin Shrine in Muskogee.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict/War in the crash rescue division.
Anyone who knew him also knew he was a staunch democrat.
Sequoyah loved going to the dirt track races and loved it even more when Mark raced!
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Richard and Johnny; and sister, Annie.
Sequoyah is survived by his wife; son, Mark (Pam) of Tahlequah; daughters, Debra (Doug) Mason of Ft. Gibson, Cathye (Jim) Etchison of Muskogee, and Linda, of the home; grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) Patrick, Aaron (Victoria) Mason, Emily Mason, Allen (Tracey) Etchison, and Haley Martin; step grandchildren, Tody (Denise) Etchison, Mark (Sandia) Etchison, Kevin (Kellie) Etchison, and Tammy (Bobby) Hughey; great- grandchildren, Kallie Patrick, Bryce Patrick, Trae Patrick, Charles Mason, Nizhoui Mason, Colby Mason, Caleb King, Emily Sue Tidwell, Emory Tidwell, Daxton Tidwell, and Avery Etchison; step great-grandchildren, Sarah Hughey, Tiffany (Cory) Carter (Caden), Aubrey (Jon) Etchison, Taylor (Jessica) Etchison (Lily, Ivy, Remy), Brady Etchison, Dustin Etchison, Luke Etchison, and Chelsey Etchison; along with other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bedouin Shrine Transportation Fund, in Sequoyah’s honor.
A family conducted memorial service will be at 2PM, Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the Tahlequah First Baptist Church.
