Ruth Jo (Cookson) Carnagey, 80, of Fort Gibson, was born February 6, 1942, in Tulsa, OK to Joe and Vera (Chambers) Cookson and peacefully passed away June 4, 2022, in Tulsa, OK with her loving family by her side. She met and later married the love of her life, Jim Carnagey on August 6, 1967, in Fort Gibson, OK. A marriage that stood the test of time of 54 years, nine months and 29 days. She received her Masters of Business in Education at Oklahoma State University. She started her career as a teacher and retired from Fort Gibson School System. She then worked as the Internal Auditor at Fort Gibson State Bank for 10 years. Ruth Jo was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #20 in Fort Gibson. She enjoyed her philanthropic work with the Alpha Theta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority. Ruth was a lifetime alumni member of Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University. She loved to read and excelled in crossword puzzles. But her greatest love was her family. She loved spending quality time with her grandkids in every adventure you could think of. She is loved by many and will be missed by even more. Ruth Jo was preceded in death by her father, Joe J. Cookson. Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Jim of the home; daughter, Kara West and husband John of Fort Gibson, OK; her grandchildren, Jake and Peyton West also of Fort Gibson, OK; siblings, Loretta Cook and husband Jimmie Dee of Cushing, OK, Joe Cookson, Jr. and wife Saundra of Fort Gibson, OK, Tom Cookson and wife Monica of San Diego, CA, Brenda White and husband David of Dallas, TX, and Gary Cookson and wife Dana of Oolagah, OK; and her mother, Vera Cookson of Fort Gibson, OK; numerous other family members and many friends. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested memorial contributions to St. Jude at stjude.org or the Oklahoma School for the Blind 3300 Gibson Street Muskogee, OK 74403. Ruth’s viewing will be held noon-7PM Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson. Her celebration of life will be 11:30AM Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Larry Moore officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at 12:30PM at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Jimmie Joe Cook, Colby Cook, Brian Cookson, Joey Cookson, and Greg White serving as casket bearers.
