Died Thursday, October 7, 2021
Marifrances “Mari” Wilson was born January 14, 1932 in Hamilton County, Indiana. She passed peacefully at her home in Muskogee on October 7, 2021 to her forever home with the Lord she loved.
She was born to Edwin Newby of Walnut Grove, IN and Mable Whitehead Newby of Perkinsville, IN. Mari was one of seven children. Upon her mother’s death, Mari, at the age of 3 and four of her siblings were placed in foster care. Mari remained in foster care, mainly on the Brown’s Indiana farm, until her marriage to Harold Evan Wilson at age 18. A few years later, the Wilsons moved to Ramona, CA in 1957, then McAlester, OK in 1968 and Muskogee, OK in 1977. After a divorce, Mari worked as a health food store assistant manager in Curt’s Mall and custodian at Hilldale Elementary School until her retirement. She enjoyed playing the piano in church, and gardening and crafts.
Mari was a devoted Christian and member of Elm Grove Assembly of God. She was called to be a prayer warrior. Her love for the Lord carried her through many trials and hard times. In the early 1960’s in Ramona, CA, while waiting at the school bus stop, she was abducted at gun point. She gives all the glory to God that led her to fire the abductor’s rifle through the top of the Jeep and jump from the moving vehicle, rolling down the hillside to the ravine bottom. She crawled on her hands and knees through the sagebrush to a home that got her to medical and police personnel.
Mari’s greatest accomplishment, she would say, was being a loving mother. She was her children’s best friend, defender and supporter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings; and son, Kyle Evan Wilson.
Mari is survived by her sister, Joan Newby Foley of Longview, TX; daughter, Oyana Wilson of Muskogee, OK; son, Kim Wilson of Tucson, AZ; daughter-in-law, Audrey Veldman; granddaughters, Nora Veldman Wilson, all of Tucson, AZ and Alison Veldman Wilson of Austin, TX; along with other family members and friends.
Mari will be laid to rest in Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee.
