Emmitt Maxey, 79, was born in Muskogee on June 23, 1942 to Tom Maxey and Laura Rhodes and peacefully passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021 in Muskogee. Emmitt lived a full life and loved his family. He began his military career by serving in the Army National Guard to be followed by serving in the United States Navy. He received an honorable discharge in October 1965. He started his career being a proud Firefighter for the City of Muskogee, where he served the citizens until he retired after 20 years. Emmitt's service was not complete, he went on to help serve his fellow Veterans with a career at the VA Hospital. Emmitt loved to share stories with his co-workers or pester and play jokes and he never met a stranger.
Early in his life Emmitt was not afraid of a challenge or a fight. He often remarked that, "I might not have won every fight I was in, but I guarantee that other guy knew he was in a fight." That was before his life was changed by the blessing of his family. He loved his kids and always worked hard to provide for them. Later in life he was always accompanied by his loyal and loving dog Jack, truly a companion to the end.
Emmitt is survived by his son, Jerry Maxey; and daughter, Teri Cox; granddaughters, Brandi Edwards and husband Kyle and Heather Maxey; great grandchildren, Trey, Delaney, and Kyler; brother, Tommy Maxey; and sister, Evelyn Kelly, many friends and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom Maxey and Laura Rhodes; and his wife, Lorene Maxey. Emmitt’s obituary was beautifully written by his family. A memorial service celebrating Emmitt’s life will be held 11:00AM Friday, October 29, 2021 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Pastor Roger Pratt officiating.
