Deborah “Debbie” Hix, 67

Died Tuesday, June 18, 2019

Deborah “Debbie” Hix, 67 of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. She was born on November 27, 1951 to Donley Wayne and Mary Alice (Strayhorn) Lowe in Watonga, Oklahoma. Debbie graduated from Muskogee Central High School with the class of 1970. She went on to Oklahoma State University and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree of science in home economics in 1974. She also went to Northeastern State University and obtained her Master’s Degree of Education and Master’s Degree in School Counseling.
Debbie married the love of her life, Winston Bruce Hix, on December 29, 1972 at Bacone Chapel in Muskogee, Oklahoma. They shared over 46 years of life and marriage together.
She worked at Fort Gibson Public Schools from 1977-1990 as a kindergarten teacher. In 1990, Debbie began her career at Muskogee Public Schools as an elementary school counselor and retired in 2013. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Missions Committee, Muskogee County Cattlewomen’s Association, Oklahoma Education Association, and the Oklahoma Counselors Association.
Debbie enjoyed photography, traveling, fishing and boating. She adored her family especially her grandchildren. Debbie will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Russel and Pat Strayhorn, and Macel McGee; In-laws, Ray and Ruth Hix; uncles, Tom Strayhorn and Stan Lowe; and aunt, Lou Dellah Foster.
Debbie is survived by her loving husband Winston Hix of the home; son, Casey Hix and wife Jamie of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Lindsey Varner and husband Keegan of Tishomingo, OK; parents, Don and Alice Lowe of Muskogee, OK; grandchildren, Parker, BeBe, Kohen and Kennedy; and many other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Missions Fund at: 1501 N 43rd St E, Muskogee, OK 74403.
A celebration of Debbie’s life will be 11AM, Monday, June 24, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Don Blankenship and Pastor Sam Dunn officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with members of the New Hope Baptist Adult 3 Sunday School Class serving as honorary pallbearers.
