Deacon Leothy “Joe” Franklin, 81

Born Tuesday, April 11, 1939

Died Friday, November 6, 2020

Mr. Leothy Franklin, Jr., after 81 years, went to be with the Lord on Friday morning, November 6, 2020 from Muskogee. Leothy lived a full and faithful life and simply changed his earthly address for his new home in heaven.

Leothy, Jr. was the fourth child born to Leothy, Sr. and Josephine Thompson Franklin on April 11, 1939, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He spent his early years in the Northwest Community of Okmulgee County. He graduated Dunbar High School, Okmulgee, Oklahoma and was employed by Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company (OTASCO) in the auto department. He retired from Fansteel (FMRI, Inc.) Company, Muskogee, where he worked as a Chemical Technician.

Affectionatly referred to by family and friends as "Joe," he was firmly committed to his FAITH, FAMILY/FRIENDS and FISHING.

Mr. Franklin united early in life with the Northwest Baptist Church. After moving to Muskogee, he united and attended church at Antioch Baptist Church and later, Rayfield Baptist Church. He loved the church and served in many positions, with his last position as Deacon at Rayfield Baptist Church. He enjoyed the music department and loved to sing older hymns that reminded him of his early church years and singing with his family.
When he was married to Essie Mae Ransom, they raised three children; Lorenzo, Michael and Nichole. He and Essie opened their home and hearts to help family members and other youth reach their life’s goals.

His family and friends knew they could depend on him. He was a father to those who needed nurturing and structure in their life. He was a counselor to those who had a problem and needed support and guidance. He was a mentor and role model for both males and females with words of encouragement to follow their dreams and put God first in their lives.

Fishing and traveling were his favorite hobbies. He briefly lived and worked in Thailand during his tenure with Fansteel. He traveled throughout the United States, but his favorite place was on the banks of Ft. Gibson Lake. Often he would come home with an empty fish bucket, yet his mind and soul were filled with the peace you can only get from marveling at nature and the goodness of God.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Nichole Franklin; special friend Martha Murray, Chicago, Illinois; aunt Roxanna Thompson Pierce, Bessemer, Alabama; Brothers, Herbert Franklin, Novato, California; and Lester((Zina) Franklin, Okmulgee, Oklahoma; 4 Sisters, Yvonne Brown, Kansas City, Missouri, Mildred Ramsey(Edwin), Tulsa, Oklahoma; Charlene Franklin, Okmulgee, Oklahoma and Mahalia Hawkins, Tulsa, Oklahoma; along with grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leothy Franklin, Sr., Mother, Josephine Thompson Franklin; sons, Lorenzo Franklin and Michael Franklin; brothers Elbert L. Franklin.; Oscar W. Franklin and Roland H. Franklin; sisters Devora Franklin Bates and Lenora Franklin Hanson; grandparents, Herbert(Hubert) and Emma Franklin and Joe and Rosie Lee Thompson.

A Memorial Ceremony to celebrate Brother Franklin's life will commence on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 1:00 PM in the People's Chapel of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Muskogee. His Pastor, Reverend Leroy Walker, Sr., of Rayfield Baptist Church will officiate.
