D.D. Hayes, 72

Born Tuesday, November 4, 1947

Died Saturday, March 21, 2020

D.D. Hayes, 72, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020. He was born on November 4, 1947 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Melvin J. Hayes and Audrey Essary Hayes. D.D. attended Pershing, West Junior High, and Central High School. He participated in many sports but excelled in football. He was named All Conference Guard 1965-66. He graduated from Northeastern State University in 1969 and from the University of Tulsa Law School in 1974. In 1980, D.D. argued before the Supreme Court of the United states and won. The decision was nine to zero. He also served in the Army Reserves 1970-1975.
D.D. became a Christian at age seven. He was a long-time faithful member of First Baptist Church. He led the men’s Bible study on Tuesday night at his office. These men covered the whole Bible more than once.
Work characterized D.D.’s life. He tirelessly worked for his clients. He worked from age 13 until he couldn’t work anymore. He worked at Chet’s as a young man to put himself through school. He taught History and English at West Junior High, he worked as a Police legal advisor and as the City Attorney for Muskogee. He was also a partner with Bonds, Matthews, Bonds and Hayes in private practice. He established Hayes Law Office in 2001. His son Andy Hayes joined the firm in 2008. He was one of the first attorneys to use every form of technology to help him in his work. He worked while fighting cancer, and even worked on vacations (which were few).
He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with Marcy Ann (Lange) Hayes on March 7th, 2020. He passed on his mother’s birthday.
D.D. is preceded in death by his mother, Audrey Hayes; father, Melvin Hayes; sisters, Roberta McCullum and Brenda Leggett.
He is survived by his wife, Marcy Hayes; brother Melvin Hayes and wife Diane; brother-in-law, Dr. John Lange; sister-in-law, Nancy Scoggin and husband Dr. Steve Scoggin; son, Andy Hayes, wife Katie, and their daughter Annie Hayes; daughter, Jennifer Kent and her four children, Andrew Ericson, Olivia Ericson, Eloise Ericson, and Hayes Ericson; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family.
Visitation for D.D. will be 9:00am-5:30pm Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Cornerstone Funeral Home and 9:00am-8:00pm Thursday, March 26, 2020 at Cornerstone Funeral Home.
The family has chosen to celebrate D.D.’s life with a private family service with Gary Sizemore, Weldon Stout, Dr. Jewell Daniels, David Helms, Paul Glover, Mike Leonard, Steve Scherer, Drew Wilcoxen, and Bob Locke serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist renovation fund.
