David Dwight Southerland, 63

Died Monday, September 23, 2019

David Dwight Southerland, 63, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away on Monday, September 23, 2019. He was born on October 20, 1955 to Aurthur Dean Price and Cherry (Bassett) Price in Shamrock, Texas. He attended Olustee High School. David served in the United States Army during Vietnam and received an honorable discharge. David was very patriotic and loved his country very much.
He was a volunteer fire fighter for many years until he was hurt in the line of duty. He also took care of the fire department grounds.
David was the program director for the Department of Corrections and retired after serving for 30 years. He assisted with the Special Olympics’ golf tournaments and he got to go to the National Olympics in the 1980’s. David always helped his sister with her son. He coached generations of kids in softball and baseball and was called the “Umpire King”. Unfortunately he had to give up coaching due to health reasons.
David loved his family and was very loyal to the ones he loved. He also loved spending as much time as possible with them. He will be missed by everyone he knew and loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Dale Southerland and Edwin Price; and 1 great-nephew.
David is survived by his sisters, Becky Palmer and husband Leroy of Altus, OK, and Twilla Perkins of Hollis, OK; sister-in-law, Joyce Southerland of Tulsa, OK; nieces & nephews, Chris Davlin, Jason Davlin, Brandon Davlin, Jennifer Johnston, Julie Lovett and Kevin Southerland and wife Chandra; 9 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other family members and friends.
A celebration of David’s life will be 2PM, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Rev. Danny Mills officiating.
