Born Monday, April 27, 1925
Died Thursday, January 10, 2019
On April 27, 1925 a bundle of joy was born to the union of Levi and Luebertha Mayes. They named her Charlene, affectionately known to many of her family and friends as "JAP". Charlene grew up in Nuyaka, OK; and attended grade school at Pleasant Grove and high school in Slick, OK: in Creek County. She also joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, accepting Christ as her personal savior at an early age. During high school, she met and married, Daniel L. Johnson, November 7, 1940. This union continued seventy-eight years until her death. To this union eight children were born.
Charlene did domestic work for many years in Okmulgee and in the Nuyaka community. She also did civic work, helping D.P. Lilly get residents of Okmulgee community registered to vote. Until her health began to fail, Charlene was an excellent homemaker who had a passion for cooking, baking, canning and crafts. She loved selling Avon and her crafts, because it afforded her a chance to meet and talk to people. She never met a stranger. Charlene loved "dressing up" and wearing her fancy hats and her makeup. Most of all Charlene loved family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, four aunts and one uncle.
Charlene leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband, Daniel L. Johnson, who has always been by her side, eight children, Dannie Mae Carlis of Tulsa, OK; Doris L. Adams, (John), Tulsa, OK; Charlie Johnson, Jr., Tulsa, OK; Daniel L. Johnson (Burma), Aurora, CO; Ron Johnson (Linda), Okmulgee, OK; Glenda J. Golden (Rodney), Tulsa, OK; Kasandra G. Clark (Larry), Tulsa, OK; and Jackie J. Tate (Roy), Tulsa, OK'; her "one and only" sister, Silverta Livington, Coolidge, AZ; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and some great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, a very special cousin, Theresa Clayton, Midwest City, OK; and five special friends of the family who she treated like daughters, Frances Martin Hall, Marcelle Phillips, Thomasine Alexander, Veola West and Dorothy Winbush.
