Betsy Kirkley Edwards was born in Pryor, Oklahoma on February 20, 1942. She was the daughter of James M. Kirkley and Mary Mildred Kirkley. Betsy’s mother and grandparents owned a farm east of Pryor. During her school years and later in life she would spend summers on the farm.
She attended Tulsa Public Schools where her mother worked. Betsy graduated from the old Tulsa Central High School. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in 1964 from the University of Tulsa. Later that year, Betsy relocated to Chicago to attend graduate school at McCormick Theological Seminary.
In 1966 she married Jonathan Tuttle of Amherst, Massachusetts. They were married for two and half years.
In 1971 she met her future husband, James Edwards at church. They were fast friends, but over time the relationship deepened. They were married in October of 1980 and remained together for 38 years.
Betsy took a job with the City of Chicago in 1972. She worked there for the Department of Human Services for 29 years.
Betsy moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma in 2004 to care for her mother, Mary Rogers. Her mother passed away in October of 2008.
Betsy is survived by her husband, James Edwards; step-mother, Patsy Kirkley; two half-sisters, Kendra and Jamie; four step-brothers; grandchildren of Patsy, Shiloh, McKenzie and Jayce; along with many other family members and friends.
A celebration of Betsy’s life will be 10:00A.M., Monday, October 15, 2018 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Jeremy Jones officiating.
