Bertie Faye “Nana” Metzger, 85

Born Wednesday, April 1, 1936

Died Thursday, December 2, 2021

Bertie Faye Jones Metzger, age 85, passed away peacefully at home on December 2, 2021. She was the 9th child of Chester McReynolds Jones and Ida Mae Davis Jones. She and her twin brother Bert would complete the Jones family of 10 siblings on April 1, 1936. The April Fool’s joke that day was that second, unexpected baby. Bertie attended Braggs Schools and graduated with the Class of 1954. After high school, she worked at Woolworth’s, and in the 1980’s, she worked at Anthony’s for a few years.
Bertie would meet the man who stole her heart, Jerry Fredrick Metzger, in high school in 1948. They would marry on March 26, 1955 and share more than 66 years of marriage. They would make their home on the farm where they grew cotton, soybeans, maize, corn, wheat and sod through the years. Bertie worked alongside her husband in the fields many years driving tractors and hauling loads of cotton to the gin. The farm life allowed her to instill these hardworking values in her children. Her hands were rarely still as she canned many of the vegetables that they grew in the garden which helped to provide huge lunch spreads on the table day after day.
Bertie loved to love on people, especially her children and grandchildren, spoiling them often with her fried chicken, chocolate cake, tomato relish, chicken enchiladas and homemade fudge. She enjoyed growing flowers and plants, and keeping an immaculate yard. She also had a love for hummingbirds. She loved to travel to Colorado and Arizona and no one could pack a RV as efficiently as Bertie. She, along with Jerry, was a member of HOACGA where they spent their free time exhibiting their huge collection of carnival glass.
Bertie knew without a doubt that Jesus was her Savior. She and Jerry attended Crescent Valley Baptist Church where they were baptized together. This is the greatest gift for her family to know that she is now safely and eternally in the arms of Jesus.
Bertie is survived by her husband, Jerry F Metzger, of the home; daughter Melinda Goodnight and husband Phillip; son Jerry L Metzger and wife Cindy; son Toby Metzger and wife Sheila; 8 grandchildren: Eric Goodnight and wife Jessica, Patrick Goodnight and wife Brittany, Ryan Metzger, Travis Metzger and wife Rachel, Hayden Metzger, Hannah Mann and husband Derrek, Wyatt Metzger and Jerry C Metzger; 5 great-grandchildren: Isiah, Haley, Jacee, Evelyn and Tanner. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and two sisters.
Memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 6, 2021 at South Bethel Cemetery in Braggs, OK with Rev. Sam Dunn officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
