Arthur Wayne “Dub” Sloan loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend died Sunday, May 8, 2022 in Gore, Oklahoma with his family by his side.
Dub was born May 20, 1935 in Gore, Oklahoma to C.E. and Nola Sloan. He attended Gore High School graduating in 1953. He asked for a 1953 Farmall Super C Tractor as a graduation gift. He pursued an education at Connors State College earning an Associate’s Degree in 1955. While at Connors he met his bride, Phyllis Ann Martin. They married May 26, 1955 in Checotah, Oklahoma and established their home in Gore where he pursued his farming career. They enjoyed 66 years full of love.
Weather permitting, he could be found on the farm or in his garden. Dub started Sloan Sweet Corn in 1965 in order to save money to put his children through college. It’s become a family tradition that continues every summer. He loved to grow a large garden and was known to leave vegetables every week for church members. Dub was an advocate for agriculture, and the growth of the community. He was a board member of Farm Credit for 30 years, Gore School Board Member, a Boy Scout Leader and a member of Gore United Methodist Church. In 2018, Dub received the Oklahoma Water Pioneer Award for achievement in water conservation. He and Phyllis spent many nights square dancing. They won Sequoyah and Muskogee County farm family of the year in their early and later years.
Dub was preceded in death by his parents, C.E. and Nola Sloan; and in-laws, Selma and Verlin Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of the home; his sister, Betty Rohde and husband Bob of Tulsa, OK; his children, Dr. Phillip Sloan, Steve Sloan and wife Terry, and Kimberly and husband Art Pearson all of Gore, OK; grandson, Dr. Arthur (AJ) Pearson and wife Tiffany and their son, Arthur (AW) of Fort Smith, AR; granddaughter, Lacey Jackson and husband Michael and their son, Hendrix of Gore, OK; granddaughter, Ashley Hyde and husband Matt and their daughter, Hudson of Edmond, OK; grandson, Cody Sloan and wife Ashley and their children, Adeline, Crawford, and Clara Sloan of Gore, OK.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the Gore UMC Food Pantry at: P.O. Box 273, Gore, OK 74435 or to your favorite charity.
A celebration of Dub’s life will be 10AM, Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Gore United Methodist Church with Minister Kurt Henry and Minister Rich Brasher officiating. Interment will follow at Sallisaw City Cemetery with Dr. Arthur (AJ) Pearson, Cody Sloan, Michael Jackson, Matt Hyde, Stan Sheffield, Fowler Ray Sheffield, Steve Barrick and Keith Barrick. Honorary pallbearers will be Art Pearson, Larry Gately, Gary (Squeaky) Anderson, Randy (Rambo) Casinger, and Charles Crumpler.
