C. Bart Fite

Muskogee Municipal Judge C. Bart Fite was found dead tonight around 10:30 p.m. in his west side home.

Fite, who was arrested late last week on a complaint of domestic violence—which his wife later said was an error, appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Muskogee Police.

Family friend Greg Archer found Fite’s body.

If Fite had been charged with a crime in the domestic violence arrest, he stood to lose his license to practice law in addition to whatever penalties might have accompanied the case.

DISCLAIMER: It is the policy of MuskogeeNOW.com to not report on suicides or apparent suicides, with two exceptions: public figures and suicides that occur in public. In this case, since Fite was a public figure and the subject of a recent flurry of news coverage, he meets the first exception.

UPDATE 12:49 a.m.: Muskogee Police released this statement:

“Tonight at around 1030pm, the Muskogee Police Department was dispatched to the residence of local attorney, Bart Fite on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Mr. Fite deceased from what appears to be a self- inflicted gun shot wound. As the investigation is ongoing, no further details will be released at this time.”
