Rodney “Rod” Brassfield, more affectionately known to his many students as Mr. B., passed away Thursday evening at his home in Braggs. He had just celebrated his 77th birthday last Wednesday with more than 328 posts from friends and loved ones on social media.
Mr. B retired from Hilldale Public Schools in 2006 after teaching sixth grade science for 30 years. His desire to help others began early when he became a Muskogee Police officer at the age of 21. His two-year career as an officer with Muskogee was shortened when he enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He earned the title of sergeant with the 534th MP company.
His teaching career at Hilldale began immediately after he graduated from Northeastern State University with a degree in elementary education. His daughter, Julie, said he taught 6th grade science his entire career. His students learned hands-on with their bug collections, leaf collections and by planting trees.
Wanting to stay in touch with his Hilldale family, friends and other loves ones, he spent many hours on Facebook. He took the time to wish his almost 3,000 facebook friends happy birthday or acknowledge any other special occasion they may have had. His love for flowers, flags, antiques, history and beautiful sunrises and sunsets was shared with a combined 7,000 members in the Facebook groups he started.
Mr B was also active as a Shriner and raising money to help others in need. He leaves behind his wife and partner in life, Helen of 56 years; his daughters Amy and Julie and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members.
Funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cornerstone Funeral Home. The service will also be live-streamed over Facebook on his page.
